Traditional Music of Iceland



Traditional music of Iceland is generally a blend of folk and Nordic music. A certain amount of ecclesiastical influence can also be detected in the traditional music of Iceland. In this European country music is an integral and significant part of its culture. Icelandic traditional music can also be divided into two parts, vocal and instrumental. Both these forms of music has equal amount of popularity among the populace of Iceland. Musical festivals of international standard can be regarded as a proof of popularity of music in Iceland.

Traditional music of Iceland can be divided into two forms of vocal musical styles. The names of those two musical forms are syngja and kveoa. The main form of traditional music in Iceland started since the seventeenth century. The protestant hymns were sung by the local residents which took the shape of music and got integrated into the culture. Traditional music of Iceland was improvised with the introduction of harmoniums and pipe organs. One of the traditional forms of music is known as Rimur. This is mostly epic poems which are sung in a narrative style. These songs are popular since the days of the Vikings but it is till date kept alive by the people of Iceland. Names such as Hannes Bjarnason, Sigurthur Breithfjorth and Jon Sigurthsson are the few names which are famous in the field of traditional music of Iceland.

Though western music has made its intervention within Iceland the traditional form of music is still very much popular.
