Though in Iceland, the introduction of Christianity was with the catholics, yet after the Reformation, Lutherans became the major Christian people in Iceland. Lutherans have their own history of development in Iceland.
Lutherans are not the first Christian people in Iceland. The catholics were the first to bring Christianity in Iceland. But in the 16th century due to the influence of Martin Luther, Lutheranism also developed in Iceland. Martin Luther, whose religious opinions are followed in Lutheranism, revolutionized the traditional Christian thinking. The Protestant Christianity follows his teachings only. Due to the advent of 6this new Christian religious faith, the Christian world was divided into two parts, the catholics and the protestants. Lutheranism is actually Protestantism.
Lutheranism was developed in Iceland as the it was under the rule of Denmark in the 16th Century and the contemporary Danish king was in the favor of Lutheranism. As a result, the Danish King, Christian III was spreading this new belief by converting his subject in Lutheranism and making them Lutherans. The catholics in Iceland were almost effaced from this country and people became Lutherans. Till now, the majority of the Christian community in Iceland are Lutherans.
The Evangelical Church of Iceland, that is the National Church of the country also, is a Lutheran Church. This Lutheran church is also the State church of Iceland and follows the Lutheran branch of Christian beliefs.
