Legends

In Legends there are often descriptions on features of volcanoes and phenomena. A connection between nature's cultural or spiritual aspect and the scientific study of the natural processes of earth are provided in these Legends.

The location of Iceland is in Northern Atlantic Ocean by the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. The lava, a Legend In Iceland continuously accumulates for millions of years from this ridge and finally the formation of Iceland took place.

On the island at the time of recording the volcanoes were comparatively quiet. In 1904 all the people of the world were frightened when the fires of Hekla began to burn. European Christians saw Hekla as a threshold to the underworld and as an entrance to Hell. When people saw lava bombs and other missiles coming out of the crater of volcano, they had a belief that the fragments were actually spirits. As the bombs flew they often booed and these noises were taken as the painful screams of the souls. According to legends Hekla was a meeting place for witches, magicians and patrons of dark magic as it was related to underworld.

Apart from many Legends centering around Hekla there are also some blithe myths as well. A magician himself metamorphosed into a whale for swimming to Iceland as he wanted to put the entire island under his spell. But he got galvanized and frightened when he found that the land acclaimed fireballs and spirits at him and went away from there these spirits would protect their beautiful Iceland. Iceland's lava flows and rugged mountains were seen by other people as an ancient battlefield. On this battlefield immortal gods raised war against each other.

Hekla didn’t' have a very good past. Almost every myth and Legend has a connection with evil and diabolic. Now a day Legend Place Hekla has become one of Iceland’s important tourist centers. Thekla is surrounded by beautiful green meadows and sometimes it remains covered with snow. Today people come from all over the world for witnessing the volcano.

In your Iceland Holiday if you visit Hekla in Iceland then you will get to see volcanic eruptions which are a Legend of Iceland.
