Icelandic is the national language of the people of Iceland. Icelandic is a culturally and literally very rich language that bears the mark of many historical events and heritages of Iceland. Icelandic is the mother tongue of the Icelanders. This language has a history of its own. The origin of this language is associated with the Nordic language. More particularly, Icelandic language has originated from West German language.
Icelandic language has its own features and aspects. The reason behind the origin of Icelandic language is believed to be the settlement of the people from Norway though there were some people from Sweden and Britain also. Moreover, another feature of Icelandic language is that, though the people from whom this language has originated, were mostly Celtic people, there are very few traces of Celtic language in the Icelandic language of today.
Like most of the other European languages, Icelandic language has also a complex grammatical structure. Nouns and pronouns are inflected in Icelandic grammarand there are other rules as well. Icelandic language has a number of interesting and distinctive features. Unlike English, Icelandic language gave emphasis on its purity and as a result, new coinage of words along with the revival of archaic words was done in the early part of nineteenth century. It also indicates the resistance on part of the Icelandic language towards change. That is why, apart from considerable difference in phonetics, Icelandic language have still remained almost the same. Icelandic language has communities in other countries as well, like America and Canada.
