Faroese

Faroese is one of the languages with which the national language of Iceland that is Icelandic has close associations. Faroese language is associated with the Icelandic language as it belongs to the same language group of languages from which the Icelandic language has taken its origin. Faroese language has originated from the group of Indo-German languages from which the Icelandic language has also originated.

Faroese language that has many affinities with the mother tongue of the people of Iceland is the official language of the island of Faroe. Faroese language has actually come from the Old Norse language. This language had always been closely associated with the West Norwegian language from which Icelandic language has also originated. That is why there are many similarities between the Icelandic language and the Faroese language still now.

There are several people in Faroe Island who speaks in this language as Froese is the official language there. In Denmark also there are near about 12000 people who speak in Faroese language. Faroese language has not that much popularity outside the boundaries of Scandinavia. That is why there are almost no institutions to teach Faroese outside Faroe or in other places. But in London, The University College of London offers study in the field of Scandinavian studies and it is mandatory for the students to learn Faroese. There are many facilities for the students to learn Faroese in this college. Moreover, Faroe Island University also offers course in Faroese in summer that is usually three weeks long.
