Danish is one of the most important foreign languages in Iceland. Danish language is compulsory as a foreign language in the schools of Iceland. After English this is the most important foreign language that enjoys a considerable importance and status in Iceland. Danish language has close association with Icelandic language also. Both these languages have their roots coming from the common Germanic language. Moreover, both Danish and Icelandic languages are part of the Scandinavian group of languages.
Danish language has close association with the Norwegian language as well. There are affinities between the written form of Norwegian language that is known as Bokmal and the Danish language. Modern study of all these Scandinavian languages has classified these languages into several groups. Danish language now belongs to the group of Southern Scandinavian language while Icelandic and Faroese are defined as Insular Scandinavian languages. Norwegian and Swedish languages are grouped into Northern Scandinavian language.
Danish language has its reach outside Denmark also. Like it is a major foreign language in Iceland, Danish language is one of the two official languages that are used in Faroe and in Greenland. Danish also enjoys the status of being the national language in Denmark. This language is also the official language in the European Union and of the Nordic Council. Danish language has its own grammar, vocabulary and writing system as well. Danish language has several dialect forms also that are widely used in several parts of Denmark. Like Eastern Danish, Jutlandic Danish and some other forms.
