The Statue Park or Szoborpark on the outskirts of Budapest is one of the most unique places in not only the Eastern Europe but also in the whole world, as it has all the statues of renowned communist leaders. These statues have been collected from the streets of Budapest and placed at the Statue Park after the change of political system in the year 1989-90.
The Budapest Assembly was faced with the question that what needs to be done with these statues and they asked for suggestions. The Statue Park was designed by architect, Akos Eleġd, who had won the competition announced by the Budapest Assembly in the year 1991. Finally, in the autumn of 1993, the museum was opened for general public.
The Statue Park has the statues of Marx, Engels, Dimitrov, Lenin and Ostapenko. Apart from these, it also has memorials of Communist Martyrs, the Soviet Soldiers and Republic of Council members. At present, 42 large sized statues are displayed, which were collected from the streets, local museums and countryside of Budapest.
There is an antique shop near the Statue Park where one can find red star watches, original Soviet Union postcards, Trabant models, Soviet badges of honor, bottles with KGB emblem, cigarette lighters with hammer and sickle and a host of other things bearing the Communist emblem.
