Nagykanizsa is a historically important city of Hungary, which is located in the Zala County. The name of the place is also abbreviated as Kaniza. The town of Nagykanizsa has always been an important destination in terms of trade route and is actually located at the junction of five important trade routes. The lake Balaton is also located very close to the town. The trade route from Adriatic Sea to the Alpine range, the Vienna, Slovenia, and Budapest were the important places inclusive in this trade route. In the 16th century, the Italian and Syrian traders were also interested in this place because of its trade prosperity. This was the time when the Nadasdy family was in charge of the administration of the region.
The name Kaniza is a Slavish name and means ‘belonging to a prince’. Nagykanizsa had indeed been the property of the royal class of people. The Kanizsai family of royal family ruled the region for long and had built many important castles. The chief reason of historical interest in the region is the archaeological remains that have been unearthed. These findings date back to the times of Roman rule of 3rd and 4th century AD. Kaniza is frequented by tourists from both outside and inside Hungary.
