When the museum had initially opened it did not have any of the memorable treasures, which it boasts of today, but gradually over the years the collection was enhanced by public donations of personal works.
The most remarkable episode in the history of the Museum of Fine Arts in Budapest was the building of the National Gallery. In 1875, the fine arts collection of the National Museum was transferred to the National Gallery, which acted as a background for the Museum of Fine Arts.
