Millenary Benedictine Abbey of Pannonhalma

The Millenary Benedictine Abbey of Pannonhalma was the place where the first Benedictine Monks settled in Hungary in the year 996. This is very significant in Hungary for promoting the culture of Hungary, right from its inception till the present date.

The Benedictine monks of the Millenary Benedictine Abbey of Pannonhalma were responsible for converting the Hungarians to Christianity and for establishing the first school of the Hungarian country. These monks had written the first document in Hungarian in the year 1055. This monastery dates back to 1,000 years back and this history boasts of the different architectural styles, which are visible in the monastery buildings. The oldest building of Millenary Benedictine Abbey of Pannonhalma dates back to the year 1224 and still has a school and monastic community.

The damage caused during the Turkish period to the Millenary Benedictine Abbey of Pannonhalma was regained by rebuilding it in the baroque style in the 1700s. The classical tower and library was built in the first decades of the 19th century, while the grammar school and students hostel was built in the 20th century in Italian style.

The Millenary Benedictine Abbey of Pannonhalma is a building, which has become an important emblem of Hungarian history and culture.
