The Margaret Island, also known as Margitsziget, is located in the heart of the river Danube between Árpád Bridge and Margaret Bridge in Hungary. The island is 2.5 km long and 0.31 miles wide. It is the greenest spot in the entire Hungarian country and is therefore known as the ‘Green Gem of Hungary’. The Margaret Island is well-known for its swimming pools, musical fountain, water tower, small zoo and relaxing walkways. The best time to visit Margaret Island is during spring months of April and May.
The Margaret Island was previously called the Island of Rabbits during the Middle Ages. The main function of the island was to act as a royal hunting reserve. King Béla IV had rebuilt this country, which was destroyed by the Mongols and sent his 11year old daughter, Margaret to the nunnery on this island. Consequently, this island was named Margaret Island.
Till the year 1901, the island was easily accessible by boat or ship but now the fastest means to reach there is to catch the bus 26 from Nyugati tér, which passes through the island.
The Margaret Island has become a popular place for wedding ceremonies as the place is very romantic and serene. There are many hotels, which provide luxury accommodation facilities, and as a result, Margaret Island is a popular weekend getaway destination for Hungarians.
