Hungarian National Museum



The Hungarian National Museum is one of the most remarkable and oldest buildings of Hungary. The Museum was the first museum of Hungary and it boasts of a brilliant artistic collection even till this date.

In the year 1802, Count Széchényi had offered his monetary funds to set up the Hungarian National Museum. In the initial days, the collection comprised of 1156 manuscripts, 142 books, 11884 prints, maps and copperplates. The museum was designed and built by Mihály Polláck, a renowned Hungarian architect from 1837 to 1847. The huge building comprising of the museum and national library was opened for public viewing in the year 1847 and it became the fourth largest museum in Europe.

The Hungarian National Museum played a major role during the revolution of 1848 and 1849. The garden of the museum was an important spot during the revolutions and till date, the commemoration day of 1848 is held in front of the museum.

In the second half of the 19th century, many prominent scholars, such as József Hampel, Flóris Rómer, Ágoston Kubinyi and Ferenc Pulszky worked in this museum. In 1926 and 1927, the museum was completely renovated. During the 1960’s, museums like King Mathias Museum in Visegrad, Kosuth Museum in Monok and Rákóczi Museum in Sárospatak came under the jurisdiction of the Hungarian National Museum.
