Winter Sports in Hungary


Winter sports in Hungary include ice-skating, skiing, snow diving and other activities. The most winter sport in Hungary is ice-skating. Budapest has a large area, the City Park, which is specially meant for ice-skating and is situated right behind the Hero's Square. The skate rink is open from mid October to the end of February. One can even rent skiing sledges and other equipments on the spot itself and these are available for 2 forints per hour.

In Hungary, the best place for skiing is the Karancs-Medves area, which has two skiing lifts. Nógrád branch of Galyateto in the Mátraalmás municipality is the longest skiing trail in Hungary, which is suitable both for regular skiers and for international competitions as well. The best ski sits and slopes of Hungary can be found in the Mátra and Bükk region. These regions have 80-100 days of snow covering in a year. Kékesteto and Galyateto, the two highest peaks of Mátra are ideal for winter sports activities.

The most popular places, which are suitable for winter sport activities, are Mátraszentlászló, Mátraszentimre, Bánkút, Mátraszentistván and Répáshuta. These sports in the Bükk region are quite popular with winter sports enthusiasts. The Magas Hill in Sátoraljaújhely is the longest skiing trail of Hungary. Normafa in Budapest is also a popular and good place for skiing.
