Ice hockey in Hungary is a popular game, which is most widely practiced by both natives and tourists in the Hungarian country. Ice hockey in Hungary has always enjoyed a considerable fan following and has been a major crowd puller game even during the 1980's. Hungarians have played ice hockey for a considerable period of time and the year 1927 was an eventful year in the history of Hungarian ice hockey. The Hungarian Ice Hockey Federation was founded in this year and it became a member of the International Ice Hockey Federation. Budapest was the place where the first ice rink in Budapest was also established in the year 1927.
The Hungarian national ice hockey team has participated several times in the Euro Ice Hockey Challenge, Olympic Games and IIHF World Hockey Championships. The current ranking of the Hungarian ice hockey team is 22nd and is controlled by Magyar Jégkorong Szövetség.
Hungary has many ice-rinks, which are spread, all throughout the country like in Szeged, Debrecen, Baranya, Zalagerszeg, Eger, Nyiregyhaza, Szombathley and Miskolc among many others.
The Hungarian Ice Hockey Federation is implementing a project called "The Covered Ice Ages", which helps city municipalities to build indoor ice rinks. At present, four cities including Kaposvar, Zalaegerszeg, Debrecen and Tatabanya have registered themselves in this project. The Federation is also launching ice hockey training sessions as part of its agenda to improve the status of Hungarian ice hockey.
