Badminton in Hungary is slowly gaining popularity as more and more people are honing their skills in the game. In the ancient days, the game of badminton in Hungary was not as popular as in the neighboring country of Bulgaria. Badminton is popularly known in Hungary as tollaslabbda, meaning balls with feathers and racket.
The game of badminton has been officially played in Hungary since the mid twentieth century. The first badminton federation in Hungary was a committee of the National Tennis Federation and was founded by the National Physical Education Union in the year 1966. The National Badminton Federation of Hungary was formed in the year 1969 and became a part of the International Badminton Federation in the year 1970.
Badminton competitions are organized in Hungary regularly in the months of September to May. These competitions have four levels and most of the teams have junior players. Hungarian junior badminton players also achieve commendable success in the international matches.
The most renowned badminton club in Hungary is the Debrecen Sport School Badminton Club where many players practice the game. Many badminton sports clubs are slowly gaining popularity in the region and are helping to promote young talents. The European Badminton Union is funding fresh talents and is providing financial support to them.
Hungarians might soon get an opportunity to cheer their first badminton player in the Beijing or London Olympic Games.
