Erdos Pal or Paul Erdos was one of the greatest mathematicians that Hungary has ever produced and his achievements were mostly concerned with combinatorics. However, his contribution to number theory is also prominent. He worked with ease on theorems, approximation theory, set theory, probability theory and analysis. His elementary proof of prime number theorem, along with Atle Selberg is one of his biggest achievements.
Work of Erdos Pal
Erdos Pal worked hard in setting up a Mathematician's society in spite of the fact that he had very little connections or power. He was of the belief that new concepts, theorems and interesting questions can come up from anyone and everyone. This is the reason why Paul Erdos was always interested in working with all kinds of mathematicians and welcomes experts and amateurs alike. What really marked him off as a mathematician was his unique ability of asking questions. Some of these questions remain unanswered to this day.
Life of Erdos Pal
Erdos Pal was born of Jewish parents, Anna and Lajos Erdos. They were also mathematicians and teachers. His sisters had died early even before his birth and his father was taken a war prisoner of the WWI for six years. It was due to the political disturbances during his growing years, that Erdos Pal was given education at home.
