During the Turkish rule, coffee was first introduced to the Hungarian society and was known as the 'black Soup'. The coffee culture in Vienna was also responsible for the introduction of the coffee houses in Hungary. This is evident from the ancient coffee houses that sprang up at different locations around the city. Hungary coffee houses also served as an important joint for the 19th century poetic intellects and writers. These Coffee houses were also visited by ordinary people of Hungary very often. The Coffee houses also doubled as discussion centers for latest happenings and gossips.
During the World Wars, the Coffee Houses in Hungary were also not spared. Many of them were either destroyed or received heavy structural damages. The Communist regime that followed also did not do much about it. However, in the recent times, many of the old and renowned coffee houses have been renovated and opened to public.
Budapest, the capital of Hungary, has some of the ancient coffee houses of its times, with Ruszwurm being the oldest. Hungary coffee houses serve a variety of coffee drinks like Cafe Latte, Frappe, Cappuccino, Maraba Coffee, Choco-Latte, Mocha and Expresso.
