The east central European location of the country is the reason that Hungary weather is mainly of the continental type with occasional Mediterranean and Atlantic influences. Since the country is landlocked, it experiences no major maritime influences. Spring is generally considered the ideal season to visit the country, however, summers are better since it is the time when all attractions are open for public viewing. During the spring and autumns, temperatures are not very cold. In fact, quite mild and the general temperature hovers around 20°F or 9°C. During the winters, temperatures reach freezing point, although occasional rains can lower the temperature further. Occasional showers of rain are expected throughout the year.
Hungary weather is dominated by 4 major seasons, where temperatures are generally very warm from June to August. Spring and autumns are mild, while winters are cold with heavy snowfall. Visitors to the country should carry lightweight clothing, when visiting the country in summer months. On the other hand, medium-weight clothing is preferable for spring and heavy clothing should be worn in autumns and winters.
Hungary's weather is greatly influenced by the Alps and the Carpathian mountains beside which it is situated. Extreme weather conditions in the country often lead it to experience long hours of fog during the winters. The easterly winds, blowing in from Ukraine, cause the Danube to stay frozen from January to March.
