The Hungarian election system is very transparent. There are mainly 2 parties contesting for the total number of 386 seats in its National Assembly. The 2 parties contesting the parliamentary elections of Hungary are generally a leftist party and another party can be classified as following right principles. However, in most elections, the party coming to power is generally one, which has formed a coalition with the smaller parties, and has secured a majority in the Parliament. Recent trends, however, have shown a general preference of the Hungarian public for the conservative or the 'right' party. Very recently, the smaller parties have jointly formed an alliance known as the, Lungo Drom.
The Hungary election system calls for an election in 2 phases, wherein the first phase is dedicated to the election of candidates to the first 176 seats. In the 2 round elections to these 176 seats, candidates must win with a distinct majority in the first round, while in the second round, the candidate with the maximum votes wins. The remaining 210 seats elect their candidates from the regional and national lists, which depend on proportional representation. A total of 152 candidates are chosen from the regional list, while 58 candidates are elected from the national list. Political parties competing for seats in the National Assembly through these regional and national lists must necessarily gain 5% of the total votes. The first round of elections are held valid only if there is at least 25% turnout of the electorate for the elections.
