Hungarian Folk Art

Hungarian Folk art was greatly influenced by different traditions such as Swabian, Serbian, Romanian and Slovakian. The folk art of Hungary emerged from the works of the people belonging to the rural regions. These people were skilled in the making of woodcarvings, wall paintings, basket making, egg painting and so on.

Pottery is a popular folk craftwork in Hungary. Hungarians potters decorated the dishes and made them look attractive. The pottery was used as a valuable gift item as well as for decoration in weddings and ceremonies. The couple's name was often painted on the pottery dishes. The famous pottery centers in Hungary are Kalocsa, Hodmezovasarhely, Mezotur and Tiszafured. Each of the centers had a unique feature of its own. Black pottery was typical of the Madudvar center, while Mezotur was famous for its Ochre water jars that were glazed and bright.

Embroidery work of Hungary is based on three main centers namely the Matyo, Kalocsa and Mezokovesd. Since last 150 years Mezokovesd embroidery work flourished and gained popularity. Matyo works include the use of several colors. Kalocsa is an important center located in the Hungarian region.

Organic architecture is also a feature of Hungarian folk art. It is based upon themes and ideas that have been derived from the past and its designs consist of recurring shapes or colors.
