It is hard to sideline politically conscious people. Repressive governments around the world have tried it and been successful for a time but in the long run, have fallen flat on their face. In democracies, politically conscious people can force governments to work for the betterment of the country. So, it is a bit disheartening to know that there are a few countries in the world where people really do not care about politics.

The level of interest in politics varies from country to country. As per the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the South American nation of Colombia tops the chart with 50 percent of the people not interested in politics, followed by Brazil where just 41 percent of the people are interested in politics. People in the European nations of Portugal and Hungary also do not seem much enthusiastic about politics. In Portugal, some 41 percent of the people said that they had no interest in politics while in Hungary the figure stood at 36 percent. In Mexico and Spain too, politics does not seem to be the in-thing with 33 percent and 30 percent showing no inclination in political affairs.

Interestingly, some 23 percent of the people in the United Kingdom said that they were not interested in politics. In Russia, South Korea, China, France, and Italy the percentage of people not interested in politics ranged from 17 percent to 22 percent. In the US, which has just witnessed an exciting presidential contest, just 15 percent of the people claimed that they were not interested in politics. In contrast, the people in Japan and Germany can be said to be politically aware, as just five percent said that they had no interest in it.
