A number of animals, rare and beautiful, make up Greenland wildlife. Animals and birds found in the country are a delicacy for the eyes and form a spectacular and wide ranging aspect of Greenland's ecosystem. The Greenland wildlife therefore is a must watch for all the tourists who visit the country.
One of the most important aspects of Greenland wildlife is the marine life of Greenland. The marine life is a varied mixture of whales, seals, walruses and sea birds. The whales are seen in the coastal areas and also in harbors. There are two kinds of whales found in this region-the blue whale and the fin whale. About 2 million seals of different types inhabit the waters of Greenland. Walruses are mostly seen in north and east Greenland. A panoramic and colorful variety of sea birds dwell in this area. Outstanding cliff colonies make up certain parts of the coasts around Liverpool Land and Uummannaq.
Greenland is home to large mammals like Musk oxen (more than 3000), herds, reindeer, and polar bears. The oxen can be seen around the Kangerlussuaq Airport. The east coast (Scoresbysund area) is full of herds. Reindeer can be found all over the ice free zones of Greenland. The polar bears populate the northern and eastern Greenland but also reach the southern part when they get drifted by ice fields.
Besides the larger mammals, smaller mammals like arctic foxes, hares, lemmings and ermine also live in different regions of Greenland. These animals change the color of their fur in harmony with the season and can camouflage with the environment.
There is a protected national park in the north eastern part of Greenland. The park, larger than the size of England and France together, is the largest national park in the world. The park houses polar bears, walruses, reindeer, musk oxen, and wolves along with smaller animals and birds.
