Hans Island is a small island particularly of the size of football field but it is estimated that this island may be hiding a massive oil deposit. Hans Island is barren but important piece of island situated between Greenland and Ellesmere Island. Hans Island consists of glorified clutter of rocks in the Canadian arctic and it’s a tiny island of merely 1.3 km area wise and civilization is far away from Hans Island. But there is a dispute over Hans Island since 1973 with both the Canadian and Danish government. The Hans Island is situated in an area called as the Nares Strait and it is recognized under the Canadian sovereignty.
Hans Island Greenland if viewed properly falls in gray zone and on idealistic point of view it represents Canada's ability to defend it both politically and militarily and on the other hand the Danish has landed in Hans Island and marked there appearance again and again in this place and the government of Denmark considers it a Danish territory. It is of general belief that Hans Island was discovered in the year 1853 by famous Hans Hendrik of Greenland with the agreement with the Danish authorities and thus the name of Hans Island was given. Thus it was person from Greenland who is behind the name Hans Island.
Greenland Hans Island is considered as the part of the kingdom of Denmark and belongs to Greenland; the geological evidence also states that. But according to Danish government both Canada and Denmark has the reason for fruitful co-operation on Arctic matters.
