Greenland is a beautiful country and it’s blessed with peace loving peoples who never waged war with anybody and they are generally friendly and have a warm heart for the visitors.
Greenland history dates back to the year 982 -985 .Eric the Red explored the country and gave it a beautiful name of Greenland and that is after being outlawed for three years due to manslaughter in Iceland.
History of Greenland is centered on Eric the Red as he settled in southern Greenland in Brattahlid, today’s Qassiarsuk and he was the first settler to Greenland. Later on more settlers arrived from Scandinavia and they settled in South west coast of Greenland between 986 – 1000.The first Christian church named as Thjodhildur’s Church was built at Brattahlid in the year 1000 by the Christian community brought by Leif Eriksson, son of Erik the Red which is a mentionable event in
Greenland history.
Around 1000 Leif Eriksson discovered and named present day lands and they are Helluland, Markland and Vinland and they are benchmarks in
Greenland history. Again in the year 1124-26 the Episcopal residence is placed at Gardar, now known as Igaliku. In 1261 Tax service came into existence and then in 1350-60 Inuit began to appear near the Norse areas and they abruptly settled along the coastline. In the year 1408, a wedding took place in Hvasley church and finally in the year the Norse population of Greenland disappears.
Culture and History of Greenland symbolizes the ancient civilization which is still predominant in the larger towns of Greenland.
