Greenland Ice Sheet

The Greenland ice sheet is next only to Antarctica in size on the planet. Recently the ice sheet of Greenland is making headlines all over the world for its high melting speed. The Greenland ice sheet is also known as indlansis or inland ice. The ice sheet of Greenland is a remnant of the ice age. The fast rate of melting of this ice sheet is a concern for all the scientists and environmentalists all over the world. The Greenland ice sheet is a subject of extensive scientific research these days. The melting of the ice sheet is caused mainly during the summer season when the temperature rises.

The length of the Greenland ice sheet is about 2400 kilometers and the width of it is about 1000 kilometers. This ice sheet is located in the Arctic Circle. This ice sheet covers around eighty percent of the land area of Greenland. Apart from the ice sheet there are a number of ice caps and individual glaciers in Greenland. If the ice sheet of Greenland land melts scientists are of the opinion that all the coastal cities of the world might be severely affected or might loose there existence. The weight of the ice has also taken toll on the landmass of Greenland and if the ice melts Greenland would be an archipelago of islands. The main research on this ice sheet is done by NASA and also other universities of the world. The recent discovery of microorganisms under the ice sheet of Greenland is a major finding by the scientists.
