Greenland Ice Cap

The ice cap of Greenland is the one of biggest sheet of ice on the planet. Recently the Greenland Ice cap has been making news due to the effect of global warming on it. Almost one eighth of total ice on earth is present in the icecap of Greenland. After Antarctica Greenland is the only place where there is more ice than anywhere under the sun. The ice mass of the Greenland ice cap is 2.5 million cubic kilometer. In the current century the Greenland ice cap is facing the adverse affect of global warming thoroughly. Many parts on the planet are going to be flooded for ever if even seven meters of the Greenland ice cap melts.

The ice cap of Greenland has a mean height of about 2135 meters and about 2000 meters are under the surface of the water. The average annual temperature of the Greenland icecap is between minus 20 degree centigrade to minus thirty degree centigrade. The exclusive thing about the icecap of Greenland is that the temperature is low at the surface and gradually increases with as one goes higher. Piteraqs which is a form of snow blizzard is fairly common in this part of the world. The recent scientific research has proved that the icecap is growing at a rate of 20 to 30 cm per year due to the effect of global warming. The excessive rainfall on this area due to evaporation is the reason behind this.

The Greenland icecap is one of the two parts of the remnant of the ice age, the other one is Antarctica.
