The
Greenland glacier is a subject of scientific research nowadays. The melting of the ice of
Greenland glacier is a cause of concern among all environmentalists and scientists. The other name of the Greenland glacier is ‘Jakobshavn Isbrae. This is also the fastest moving glacier on the planet currently. The speed of the ice sheet has doubled in the past five years significantly. Global warming has been made responsible for this phenomenon.
The reason behind the melting of
glacier in Greenland is the hot temperature on the surface of the ice. The sea level is rising significantly due to this reason. This might double the amount of rise of water in the sea each year. Almost 75% water which is responsible for the rise of sea level is due to the augmented glacier speed. The cause of concern is the rise of temperature of
Greenland in the past two decades. The temperature increased about three degree Celsius according to the scientists.
Scientific research has discovered tiny microbes from the sample taken from around three thousand meters below the surface of the ice. These microbes are about one lakh twenty thousand years old. This discovery might help scientists determine whether there is life on cold planets like Mars.
Between 1964 and 1985 the
Greenland glacier reduced significantly and study shows that the process of shifting doubled in the period from 1997 to 2002.
Greenland Ice sheet is smaller only to Antarctica on earth so if it melts there can be significant effect on the world’s atmosphere.
