Greenland Dog has its origin in the coastal area of the Arctic regions of Northern Siberia Alaska, Canada and Greenland. It is one of the oldest breed of the world, 66 pounds in weight and 24inches in height. Around 4000-5000 years ago the dog first reached Greenland with Sarqaq people.
Greenland Dog has a broad, wedged-shaped head, slightly tilted eyes and small, ears covered with thick far to prevent them from frost bite. They possess strong muscular legs. They also have a water proof double coat that helps them living outdoor in temperature that can reach -50 or even -70 degree Fahrenheit.
The large intake of food helps them developing their strong bone structure. An adult Greenland Dog must be exercised everyday and in the case of a puppy exercises should be augmented slow and steady as little as 10 minutes. They are independent, dominated breed who posses immense power and strength. At the same time they are adaptable, intelligent good natured, affectionate. So the owner must be patient and determined while training them.
Greenland Dog has got a large variety like Eskimo dog, Husky, Luuit Dog and Esquimaux. However due to the decline of dog-drawn transport they have fall short in number. Alaskan malamute, Siberian husky and Samoyed has become more domesticated and eye-catching dogs in Greenland. The Antarctic Surveyor and explorer prefer the qualities of Greenland Dog. They were used as hunting dogs to hunt seal and polar bear.
Greenland Dog was first brought into the UK around 1750 and has adapted well in the foreign country.
