The
Vikings came to Iceland and Greenland during 800-1200 years. Seal and Caribou were the diet of
Greenland Vikings. Due to warm climate the Vikings migrated very easily. The settlement of the Greenland Vikings Age was set up in the sheltered fjords of the coast of south and west. The Greenland Vikings used a Viking ship named Knorr which was used for traveling long distance.
A man was killed by the Greenland Viking Thorvald Asvaldsson of Jaederen in the year 960. He was pressured to leave Norway so he shifted to northern Iceland. Two men were killed by his son named Eric. Eric was banned from Iceland for a period of 3 years. He voyaged on the west for finding a land which was discovered by the Icelanders some years back. He didn't have any idea about that land. On the southwestern coast a suitable area was founded by him. He named this new land as Greenland.
The new land, Greenland was not suitable for agriculture. The Vikings in Greenland fed largely on the dairy products and meat. Berries, edible grasses, and seaweed were included in the vegetable diet of the Greenland Vikings. During the time of Vikings at Greenland the climate was very cold and due to these cattle breeding and dairy farming was done in the fjords which were sheltered. Trade was carried on by swap. Butter, cheese, wool, blue fox furs, polar bear skins, walrus and narwhal tusks were provided by the Greenland Vikings in Greenland to Europe. Timber, iron, corn and salt were provided to the Greenland Vikings by Norway and Europe.
