In
Greenland, music is varied and popular, deriving its roots from Inuit and Danish strains. Recent influences from the US and the UK have added to the musical richness of Greenland.
Traditional music or folk music has been popular in Greenland since a long time, right from the beginning of the Inuit and Danish settlements in Greenland. Standard folk tradition included storytelling in sing-song mode. The Inuit folk music was mainly based on folk vocals and drums, with the Inuit drum dances being a famous spectacle.
Other musical instruments were brought to Greenland by the Danish. While they brought the fiddle and accordion with them, the Moravian missionaries who came to the island brought along instruments like violins and brass instruments. Many classical composers have Greenlandic themes in their works.
Greenland's forays into modern popular music started in the mid 20th century, when communication improved between Greenland and north America and Europe. Since then, it has accepted popular music genres like rock, jazz and hip-hop as its own.
