Greenlandic Handicrafts

Greenlandic Handicraft has its root in the hunting culture of the Inuit people, who used to make their own tools and only the most important and useful items traveled with them. The handicrafts and the figures carved from tusk and bone reveal the mythical inspiration derived from traditional culture.

The Handicrafts of the East Greenland are of quite high quality, which is the reason behind their high demand. Among various other things the figures, peoples and animals carved in walrus ivory, reindeer antlers or soapstone are famous. For centuries cooking utensils and oil lamps are made from stone. Stone is largely used for handicrafts recently.

People run after Tupilak, which is a type of bad luck charm against enemies. It is made out of skeletons of various animals, sewn into a skin and lined with pert. Most of the Handicraft products are non-identical as all of them are crafted by hand.

The Museum has got a good collection of Handicraft products. Greenlandic Handicraft is in great demand in the outside world, though primarily they were made as an essential part of their life and not as show pieces. So utility is one of the important features of Greenland handicrafts.

Other than the Tupilak, Dogsled 'Ultima Thule', 'Ulu' (women's knife), masks and necklace of glass beads are quite famous.

Greenlandic Handicraft is not only souvenirs but also a perfect gift item. Greenlandic Handicraft is a combination of art, nature and utility.
