Christmas In Greenland
is one of the most prominent festivals observed on 25th December. Christmas is celebrated with much enthusiasm and joy in Greenland.The Christmas trees is an integral part of Christmas celebrations in Greenland. Every home decorates its Christmas tree with bright stars and ornaments. Beautifully wrapped presents are heaped at the foot of the Tree. The embellishments are often put up on the first Sunday in Advent and remain there till Twelfth Night, on 6th January. Candles illuminate all houses and Masses are held to celebrate the birth of Baby Jesus, the redeemer of mankind.
Children in Greenland love Christmas. Along with the gifts from Santa Claus they also receive goodies from the homes where they go to sing songs in groups. Children also dance around the decorated Christmas Tree on Christmas Eve. The most common gifts are a small model of a sled, a pair of tusks or a mitt made from sealskin.
The most important delicacy is the Christmas Cake. People spent a gala time enjoying the home made mulled wine and cakes. Two other delicacies served specially during Christmas in Greenland are 'Mattak', whale skin with a strip of blubber inside it and 'Kiviak', the raw flesh of auk wrapped in sealskin and buried for days.
The men wait and serve the women on Christmas Day, which is an unusual custom of Greenland.
