The name of this athletic sports, "marathon" is derived from the legend of the Greek soldier, Pheidippides, who was the ambassador from the town of Marathon to Athens to declare that the Persians were defeated in the Battle of Marathon. The history narrates, that he ran the entire route without halting, but once he declared his message "Nenikekamen" which means "We were Victorious!" to the citizens, he died out of exhaustion. This account of the extensive run from Marathon to Athens was first published in Plutarch's 'On the Glory of Athens' in the 1st century AD.
