Ancient Greeks mainly belonged to four categories. They were the Mycenaean Greeks, Classical and Hellenistic Greeks, The Byzantine Greeks and finally Greeks belonging to the Ottoman empire. The Mycenaean Greeks were the first historical people to arrive in the southern tip of the Balkan peninsula, now referred to as 'Greece'. The Classical and Hellenistic Greeks were people who strictly adhered to Greek orthodox rites and Greek language practicing a set of customs and beliefs. The Byzantine Greeks emerged with the creation of the Byzantine empire. Christianity emerged as the main cohesive power during this time. However, Greeks in the Ottoman Empire were people belonging to the Greek orthodox church, regardless of their language or the ethnic origin. The main link between the ancient Greeks and the modern Greeks have been their language, which has enjoyed a continuity in tradition.
The Greece people have evolved through various stages of civilization. Modern times have seen them integrating in the Western strata with other local groups.
