Greece National Health Service was set up in the year 1983, along with many other countries in Europe. The National Health Service of Greece was set up with the aim to upgrade the existing medical facilities available for the common people. The hospitals needed more beds to meet the needs of increasing number of patients. The National Health Service in Greece also helps in providing low cost health care for the common man of Greece.
Though Greece is known for the high quality of medical training, the health service was not at par with the other European countries. The general public hospitals did not have adequate funds to meet the demands of all its patients. All the major hospitals in Greece are generally concentrated in the big cities. Transfer of patients from provincial and islands to Athens or major cities was a problem for the patients. The National Health Service in Greece has addressed this problem by constructing new hospitals in the islands and the provincials. A large hospital in Corfu was constructed in 2005.
The Greek National Health Service also provides free or low cost health care for those who have served the Greek social security. Their families also receive certain benefits under this scheme. Members have to pay only 25 per cent of the actual prescription costs. Essential dental treatment is to a large extent free under this scheme. Large number of mobile medical units have been developed with high tech equipments.
The Greece National Health Service has been working hard to provide high quality medical facilities with international standards of hygiene to the common man.
