Greece election for the President is held once in five years. The Greek President is elected by the Parliament of Greece. As per Greek Constitution, the President can serve a maximum of two five year terms.
The Greek President is the chief of state. The current Greek President Karolos Papoulias was elected in March 2005 by a majority of 279 out of 300 votes.
Greece Parliament election
Greece Parliament election is held after every four years. The Greek Parliament or Vouli ton Ellinon is a unicameral house consisting of 300 elected members. These members are elected by direct popular vote.
The leader of the winning party is appointed as the Prime Minister, or the head of government. The Cabinet members are also appointed by the President on recommendations of the Prime Minister.
In the last general elections in Greece, held in March 2004, Konstandinos Karamanlis of New Democracy or ND was appointed Prime Minister of Greece. ND party won the parliamentary elections by securing 45% of the total votes or 165 of the parliamentary seats. PASOK party securing 40.6% of the total votes occupied 117 seats. They were followed by KKE winning 12 seats and Syaspismos getting 6 seats.
Greece election for the President will next be held in February 2010. The next Parliamentary election in Greece will take place in March 2008. Voting for the Parliament is compulsory for all Greek citizens who have attained 18 years of age.
