Greece Secondary Education




Greece secondary education has two parallel cycles. The Gymnasium provides the compulsory secondary education whereas, the post compulsory secondary education which is provided by the Lyceum or the different Technical Vocational Schools of Greece.

Gymnasiums in Greece
The Gymnasiums in Greece provide the compulsory secondary education to pupils between 12-15 years. These are basically day schools. Music gymnasiums, multicultural education gymnasiums and gymnasium sports department are the different types of gymnasiums in Greece. The education system of the gymnasium is designed in such a way so as to promote an all round development of the students. It aims at widening the scope of their values and to increase their powers of verbal expression.

In the gymnasiums they are trained to appreciate various forms of art, develop a keen aesthetic sense and be aware of their abilities and skills. Some of the gymnasiums operate in the evenings for working students who are over 14 years old. Special classes for remedial teaching are arranged in these gymnasiums for weak students, facing learning difficulties. Children with special education needs attend special gymnasiums in Greece. From the year 1996 multicultural education has been adapted, designed to meet the needs of social groups with particular social, cultural or religious identity.

Assessment in these gymnasiums are done on the basis of day to day oral tests, short written tests and tests without warning. Written examinations are held at the end of each year. Students are awarded a leaving certificate allowing them to pursue higher level secondary education. Students who are over 18 years, leave the gymnasium to join the Vocational Training Institutes.

Unified Lyceum in Greece
The lyceums in Greece provide the second level in secondary education. The students have to cover three classes in the lyceum. In class 1 the students have to study general knowledge subjects common for all. During class 2 they have to choose from subjects like theoretical orientation, practical orientation or technological orientation. In class 3 of the lyceum they attend the core classes. Various kinds of unified lyceums in Greece are Unified Musical Lyceums, Unified Ecclesiastical Lyceums, Unified Lyceums for multicultural education and Special Unified Lyceums for pupils with special education needs.

Technical Vocational Schools in Greece
The Technical Vocational schools in Greece provide the post secondary education. Subjects like mechanical engineering, electronics, electrician, applied arts, textile and clothing, construction, economics and management are taught here. Greece secondary education is designed to ensure and allow all round development among the students.
