Greece Currency

Greece currency as of now is the Euro. Euro in Greece was introduced in January 2002. Drachma, the traditional currency of Greece before January 2002 is not used any longer. 345 Greek Drachma is equal to 1 Euro.

These rates are indicative and vary on a daily basis. 1 Euro is equal to 100 cents. All Euros are issued by the European Central Bank.

The Euro banknotes are of denominations € 5,€ 10, € 20, € 50, € 100, € 200, € 500. Features of each of these notes are as follows:
  • € 5 notes are grey in color and has an illustration of classical architecture
  • € 10 notes have a red shade with picture of Roman architecture
  • € 20 notes having the picture of Gothic architecture is blue in color
  • € 50 notes having an orange shade has the impression of Renaissance architecture
  • € 100 notes are green in color and bears the illustration of Baroque and Rococo architecture
  • € 200 notes carrying the picture of iron and glass age architecture has a yellow-brown shade
  • € 500 notes having a purple shade has a picture of 20th century architecture
All the Euro banknotes were designed by an Austrian central bank employee Mr. Robert Kalina. The currency notes have both Latin an Greek inscriptions. The notes also have the initials of European Central Bank in five languages: BCE, ECB, EKP, EKT and EZB.

The Euro coins are of denominations 1 cent, 2 cents, 5 cents, 10 cents, 20 cents, 50 cents, € 1 and € 2. One side of the coin indicates the country of issuance, and the other has an impression of Europe or European Union.

Traditional Greece currency of Drachma is now a collectors item. Notes of denominations 50, 100, 200 500, 1000, 5000 and 10000 were in circulation. Coins of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 Drachmas were used.
