The PLAYERS Championship
The PLAYERS Championship is played at the Tournament Players Club at Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida . It is one of the prestigious tournaments in the US PGA Tour calendar with all the top golfers taking part. It was originally held in March but from 2007 it will be held in the month of May. The course is currently under renovation.
- The tournament purse of $8,000,000 is the highest in the PGA Tour. It is sometimes referred to as the “Fifth Major” but it is not official.
- The winner gets 40 points in the Official World Golf Ranking, the highest outside the majors.
- Winners also receive many other benefits such as a 5-year exemption from the PGA Tour, 3-year invitation to The Masters and so on.
- The tournament is famous for its signature hole, the Stadium Course's Par 3, 137-yard #17, one of golf's most difficult holes.
Jack Niklaus won the inaugural THE PLAYERS Championship in 1974. Over the years the likes of Fred Couples, Nick Price, Greg Norman, David Duval, Tiger Woods and Davis Love III have won the championship.
Stephen Ames took home $1,440,000 after beating the likes of Tiger Woods, Vijay Singh, Phil Mickelson, Retief Goosen, Jim Furyk, Ernie Els in the 2006 edition of the meet.
Tournament schedule and tickets
The next edition The PLAYERS Championship will be held from 7-13 May, 2007. Daily tickets from 10 May onwards, when the actual action begins, will cost you $65 each. If you want to see the entire tournament, you can buy the weekly ticket priced at $175.
