The Memorial Tournament
Closely associated with legendary golfer Jack Nicklaus, the Memorial Tournament is an annual event on the US PGA Tour. It is played at the par-72 Muirfield Village Golf Club, designed by Nicklaus himself, in Dublin, Ohio.
Nicklaus was instrumental in the beginning of the tournament in 1976. He had always wanted to create a golf club that would represent his passion for the game. During the Augusta Masters in 1966, he first spoke of his desire to create a tournament that would remember and honor the great golfers of the past, like The Masters, which culminated 10 years later with the birth of the Memorial Tournament .
Carl Pettersson defeated Zach Johnson and Brett Wetterixh on his way to a 2-stroke victory in 2006. In the process he received a cheque of $1,035,000 from the tournament purse of $5,750,000.
