Canadian Open
Founded in 1904, the Canadian Open goes back a long way in history. It is the second oldest stop on the US PGA Tour and third oldest tournament in the world. Held in mid-September, it is a well regarded fixture on the US PGA Tour. However, due to the revamp in the US PGA Tour calendar it has been moved to the month of July.
There had been a decline in star golfers here over the years as it was held after all the major championships. But with this change in schedule, the organizers believe that the stars will not give the tournament a miss.
The event had a special status in the interwar era, as it was considered as the third most prestigious tournament after the British Open and the US Open. Very few places are allotted to the Canadian Tour and the prize money does not count in the Canadian Tour Money List.
Jim Furyk won the Canadian Open in 2006, getting richer by $810,000. It was held at the par-70 Hamilton Ground & Country Club with a purse of $5,000,000. Other top golfers who have won here are Walter Hagen, Sam Snead, Bobby Locke, Arnold Palmer, Lee Trevino, Greg Norman and Tiger Woods. Jack Nicklaus ahs never won here though he came second best on seven occasions. The last Canadian to win here was Pat Fletcher in 1954.
Tournament schedule and tickets
The Canadian Open was last held in September, 2006. With the new US PGA Tour roster in place it will be held in July, one week after the British Open and two week before the PGA Championships.
