British Open Championship
Qualifying Procedure for the British Open Championship
The golfers can qualify in three ways for the British Open Championship . Around two-thirds of the field is made up of leading players who are given exemptions. The rest of the field is made up of players who were successful in "Local Qualifying" and those who came through "International Qualifying". There are 30 exemption categories. Some of them are:
- The top 50 players on the Official World Golf Rankings automatically qualify.
- The top 20 in the preceding season's PGA Tour's money list and European order of Merit.
- Anyone who has won one of the majors in the last five years.
- The top 10 in the previous year's British Open Championship .
In 2006, the total prize money was $7,430,000 with Tiger Woods, the winner, getting $1,338,480. He beat Chris DiMarco by two strokes. It was a very emotional moment for Woods as it was the first tournament he won after the demise of his father.
