The Movistar Panama Championship kicks off the Nationwide Tour in January. Out of the three tournaments held outside the USA, it is one of them. It has been part of the tour since its inception in 2004. Initially known as the BellSouth Panama Championship, the tournament's name was changed to its current name this year.
The 2006 Movistar Panama Championship saw Tripp Isenhour clinch the title with a three-stroke victory over Kevin Gessino-Kraft. The meet was held at the panama Golf Course and had a total prize money of $550,000. Isenhour took the winner's cheque of $99,000.
