The ING New Zealand PGA Championship is a very old tournament being played for the first time in 1920. However, on many occasions the tournament was not played due to various reasons. The tournament became part of the Nationwide Tour in 2003 when the tournament was revived after a gap of 16 years. Played at the Clearwater resort in Christchurch, New Zealand, the tournament is also sanctioned by the PGA Tour of Australasia. This is the third of the three tournaments that are played outside the USA. Originally, it was played in the match play format but then it was switched to the normal stroke play format in 1965.
The 2006 ING New Zealand PGA Championship was a very close encounter with Jim Rutledge scraping through with a one-stroke victory over joint runners-up Jarod Lyle and Brett Rumford. Lyle played a very poor final round and lost the lead for the first time in the tournament. The total prize purse for the tournament was $ 600,000 with Rutledge getting $113,684.
