Nationwide Tour
The Nationwide Tour is part of the US PGA Tour . It is a platform for golfers to qualify for the big league, i.e., the US PGA Tour . Golfers who have failed to score enough to earn a US PGA Tour card in qualifying school or do not have the money to stay there compete here. The top 20 players on this tour qualify for the US PGA Tour the following year.
The Nationwide Tour was initially known as the Ben Hogan Tour, in honor of legendary golfer Ben Hogan. It was formed in 1990 and had 30 tournaments in its schedule. The prize for every meet was around $100,000. Its name was subsequently changed to Nike Tour in 1993 and Buy.com in 2000 due to change in sponsorships. The tour got its present name in 2003 when National Insurance became its sponsor. In 2006, the Nationwide Tour has 31 events enlisted on its roster. Out of them, 28 are held in the US while Australia, New Zealand and Panama host one each.
The events on the Nationwide Tour follow the US PGA Tour guidelines. The cut is made after 36 holes and are all 72-hole stroke-play events. However, unlike in the USPGA Tour where the top 70 players make the cut here only the top 60 players get the chance to advance. The winner gets 18% of the total prize money for the tournament. Since 1997, a player who wins three tournaments in one year on the Nationwide Tour receives an immediate promotion to the PGA Tour for the remainder of the year.
