The Volvo China Open was started in 1995 but it became part of the European Tour in 2004. It is part of the tour's program to expand more into Asia. It is one many tournaments that is held in China.
The 2006 Volvo China Open was a historical event for India. Jeev Milkha Singh became the first person from the country to win a tournament on the European Tour . After a dismal first round, Singh fought back to win the title by one stroke over Gonzalo Fernandez-Casta. He received $ 322,073 in prize money.
