Though the Hong Kong Open was first played in 1959, it has been part of the European Tour since 2001. As UBS is the sponsor the tournament is known as the UBS Hong Kong Open . It is co-sanctioned by both the Asian tour and the European Tour . The tournament offers exemptions to some members of the Hong Kong Golf Association, Hong Kong PGA and Chinese PGA.
Colin Montgomerie beat KJ Choi by one stroke only to take the 2006 UBS Hong Kong Open title. He received € 170,590 out of the tournament's purse of $ 1.2 million.
