The Telecom Italia Open , as it is nowadays known, is the No. 1 golf tournament in Italy. It has been part of the European Tour since its inaugural year in 1972. The Italian Open was first played in 1925 and till last year it was known by this name. Since 2006, the name of the sponsor has been added to it.
The Telecom Italia Open is another small tournament on the European Tour . The 2006 edition offered a mere € 1.4 million in prize money. The winner received €2,33,330 out of it. Italian Francesco Molinari beat Anders Hansen to the title by four strokes.
