The TCL Classic is played in China at a course designed by architect Robert Trent Jones Jr. It was first played in 2002 and was part of the Asian Tour only. However, it was discontinued in 2003-04 and was introduced again in 2005. The European Tour co-sanctioned it in accordance to their plan of extending in China. It is played at the Yalong Bay Golf Club in Sanya on Hainan Island.
The TCL Classic offers one of the smallest purses on the European Tour . The 2006 edition offered a mere $ 1 million in prize money. The winner received €1,40,215 out of it. Swede Johan Edfors beat Andrew Buckle of Australia by a mere one stroke to clinch the title.
