The Irish Open was started in 1927 but was discontinued for 20 years from 1955. Since its introduction again in 1975 it has been part of the European Tour . It is the second of the two events on the tour that are played in Ireland. The other one is the Smurfit European Open. As the meet is held one week before the BMW Championship, it attracts quite a strong field. The prize money offered is average but not in the same level that is offered by the major tournaments on the tour. It was originally called the Irish Open but its name was changed many times. Since 2003 it is known as the Nissan Irish open .
